Born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1958, Matt Brown grew up in the New Hampshire and Washington, DC. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College in 1981, beginning then his career as a carpenter, builder, and cabinet-maker. Matt started making woodblock prints at his workshop in Lyme, NH in 1993 using the traditional Japanese hanga method. This is color woodblock printing with multiple blocks, one for each color. Water, highest quality artist pigments and rice paste are Matt's printing materials and brushes and a hand-held baren are his printing tools. Matt took his printmaking full-time in 1995.
Artist's Statement: My imagery is mostly from New England: mountains and lakes of Vermont and New Hampshire, ocean imagery from the coast of Maine. My printmaking work is motivated by a desire to develop better visual understanding. I am fascinated by how art changes the way we see our world.
