Joan Konkel's work incorporates various materials such as metal mesh, aluminum sheet and acrylic paint. These materials allow her to create a dynamic surface in which light is both absorbed and reflected. As light filters between the layers, the aluminum sheets create the illusion that light emanates from the canvas. As daylight moves into dusk, and as incandescent light follows, colors and shadows shift. The work is not static; the changing position of the viewer additionally alters the work. Layers of color are individualized when separated by space, floating as the observer moves, overlapping first one hue and then another. She believes change is enriching in art as it is in life.
