Catherine Raynes
Being the daughter of a world-renowned naval architect and living in a seaside community, much of Catherine Raynes' inspiration was shaped by the environment in which she was raised. Her father bestowed on her a passion for his craft and from an early age an indelible impression on Catherine’s own artistic passions was made. As such, much of her childhood was spent creating art and experiencing the landscapes that surrounded her—coastal, wind-swept, natural, and serene.
Catherine graduated cum laude with a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. During this time she had the distinct honor of studying abroad at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brugge, Belgium. Her time there was formative as she traveled extensively absorbing the magnificent art and history of eastern Europe. However, it was her immersion in the Dutch art culture and the dramatic light and composition of works by Rembrandt and Vermeer that most influenced her. Like these masters, Catherine strives to apply these same sensitivities to her subjects.
